A Refreshing Spot on Campus: Moremi Hall Garden, UNILAG
The University of Lagos is famous for various reasons—academic excellence, vibrant student culture, and its special locations that enhance campus life. One such location I recently visited is Moremi Hall Garden. Located right in front of the well-known Queen Moremi Hall, this garden is more than just some benches and trees—it’s a relaxing area for students, a social center, and a comfortable retreat amidst the campus activity.

As soon as I entered the garden, I was impressed by the atmosphere. It has a mix of tranquility and energy that only a few campus locations can provide. With trees offering natural shade and benches arranged in circular patterns, the space immediately encourages you to sit, unwind, and take a breath. Whether you’re alone taking a break between classes or with friends for a quick meetup, Moremi Garden consistently provides comfort.

What I enjoyed the most was the social vibe of the area. It wasn’t one of those spots where everyone is glued to their phones, disconnected. Here, people genuinely engage, laugh, share snacks, and even strike up spontaneous chats with strangers. It’s common to see a small group discussing assignments in one corner, while others gather for light-hearted banter or even casual debates on current topics. It gave me a sense of community that I honestly didn’t anticipate.

Speaking of snacks—this was another highlight of my visit. The garden features a small kiosk where you can buy popcorn, shawarma, snacks, and cold drinks at student-friendly prices. I must say, the popcorn was truly deserving of its reputation—fresh, crunchy, and perfectly sweet. It’s no wonder that students often have something to munch on while they relax in the garden. It creates a warm, almost cinema-like atmosphere, especially when there’s a big football match playing nearby.

One significant advantage is the free Wi-Fi. Funded by Google and Coca-Cola, the connection is surprisingly reliable for an open area. I watched some students check their emails, browse social media, and even download some lecture slides without any issues. For students who struggle to find space in the library or prefer studying outdoors, this is a real game-changer.

A plate of spag with chicken | 3000 | 15 steem |

Roasted chicken/ turkey | 1500 | 7.5 steem |
Baked snacks | 300 - 500 | 1.5 steem - 2.5 steem |
However, despite my enjoyment of the visit, there are aspects that could be improved. The most obvious problem was the location of the waste bin. It was situated too close to where students eat and sit, which detracted from the overall comfort. In such a lively, busy area, cleanliness and hygiene should be a top priority. I also believe the green grass surrounding the area could use better upkeep. Some parts appeared overgrown, which could attract insects or cause unnecessary discomfort. With a little environmental care, the garden could easily become one of the most beautiful and functional spots on campus.

Even with these minor issues, I would happily recommend Moremi Hall Garden to anyone seeking a cozy, refreshing, and social space at UNILAG. Whether you’re a student looking for a quiet place to read, someone wanting to hang out with friends, or just in search of a nice spot to enjoy snacks and access Wi-Fi, this garden meets almost every need.
It’s also conveniently located—just a few steps from the car park and directly in front of the female hostel, making it both accessible and safe. You don’t have to walk far or worry about feeling isolated, which is especially beneficial for evening visits.

To sum up, Moremi Hall Garden is not just a place for students—it embodies the lively, varied, and unique lifestyle of UNILAG students. I think that with some enhancements in cleanliness and landscaping, it could be an even bigger benefit to the campus experience. Until then, I will surely return—snack in hand, laughter around, and likely a few WhatsApp messages sent via that dependable free Wi-Fi.
