The Gen Z Protests: Youth-Led Resistance to Social Media Ban and Systemic Corruption
- Spark and Escalation
On September 4, 2025, the Government of Nepal issued a sweeping ban on 26 social media platforms, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Reddit, Signal, and Snapchat—citing their failure to register under newly enacted communication regulations .
While the official rationale framed the ban as a measure to regulate misinformation and protect citizens, for many it was the final trigger in a broader uprising. Youth had been rallying against entrenched government corruption and nepotism—as highlighted by Gen Z users exposing the lavish lifestyles of political scions, which galvanized public discontent .
- The Protest Erupts: “Gen Z Movement”
On September 8, 2025, tens of thousands—many clad in school uniforms—flooded Kathmandu’s streets, particularly gathering at iconic spots like Maitighar Mandala and in front of the Parliament complex in New Baneshwor .
Their slogans—“Shut down corruption, not social media”—echoed widely. Demonstrators demanded not just the revival of banned platforms, but meaningful reforms and accountability .
- Clash and Casualties: Government Crackdown
The protest turned violent as some participants breached barricades around the Parliament. In response, authorities deployed water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition .
The death toll remains tragically high, with at least 19 people killed and hundreds injured—some reports noting over 300 or even 347 casualties . The United Nations and human rights groups have raised alarm over reports of excessive force used by security troops .
- Aftermath: Government Response and Lingering Tensions
Within hours of the violence, the government reversed course and lifted the social media ban . The Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, resigned, citing moral responsibility for the crackdown .
Curfews were imposed across Kathmandu and other cities—including Birgunj, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Butwal, Itahari, Damak, Bhairahawa, and Bharatpur—to curb further unrest .
Yet, the mood remains tense. Protesters demand deeper structural change, not just a reversal of policies. Government failure to address corruption transparently continues to fuel distrust .
