Cryptocurrency and the environment

As cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, grow in popularity, concerns about their environmental impact are growing. The huge amount of electricity consumed by crypto mining is increasing carbon emissions and negatively impacting climate change.
The environmental impact of cryptocurrencies is largely due to a method called Proof of Work (PoW). It is used for some cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. In this method, miners solve complex mathematical problems to create new blocks and verify transactions. This process is very energy-intensive, as miners compete with each other.
Huge electricity consumption : The amount of electricity consumed by Bitcoin mining is more than the total electricity consumption of many small countries. This electricity is mainly produced by burning fossil fuels, which emit large amounts of carbon dioxide.
E-waste : The specialized computer chips (ASICs) used for mining quickly become obsolete and create e-waste that is harmful to the environment.
The blockchain community is looking for alternative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies. The most popular and effective of these solutions is Proof of Stake (PoS).
What is PoS : In the Proof of Stake method, validators create blocks instead of miners. These validators are selected based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold. The more coins they have "staked", the more likely they are to create a block.
Reduced power consumption : This method does not require complex calculations, which results in much lower power consumption compared to PoW. The Ethereum network recently migrated from PoW to PoS, which has reduced its power consumption by over 99%.
