再举一例：这篇课文最后一句话“It seems that man was making a real effort to understand the seasons 20,000 years earlier than has been supposed.（看来人类早就致力于探索四季变迁了，比当初人们认为的要早20,000年。）” 这里“than”的用法是个重点，不少语法学家对此有不同的看法。笔者认为这里还是看作在“than”后省略了宾语从句的主语“what”更好理解一些，即相当于“than what has been supposed”。又如同一本书中第29课的一个句子（138页第19～20行）“To compensate for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than was good for him.（为了补偿住院这一段不愉快的经历，那人喝得稍许多了一点。）”这里的“than was good for him”也可以看作相当于“than what was good for him”。了解了这一点，再做以下的试题就容易多了：
