FreeCAD Greek Translation (Part 25 - approximately 935 words)

Hello everyone! Let's start with the basics once again:

Project Details

As mentioned in my previous contributions, I have been on a new Steemit mission since @utopian-io & @davinci.witness launched the Translation Category, giving us the chance to offer our services and provide quality translations for various Open Source projects. As I have mentioned several times in the past few weeks, FreeCAD is my second project and I have been having great fun working on the translations of this software. FreeCAD is an Open Source AutoCAD competitor that runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and supports various types of open file formats.

This is just a reminder of the importance of all Open Source communities in a hectic world of scientific development and suppression of information:

Open Source means true freedom; there are no limitations. What better way to assist scientific progress and development than with the creation of free powerful tools. And even though this is not news to many of you, it is worth noting that the most important advantage of FreeCAD is the fact that is is an Open Source project. As I have mentioned several times in the past few weeks, FreeCAD can be used by other programs as a library as well. Suppression of information can slow our civilization's progress down, that's why Open Source projects are a technological blessing of our times.

And this is where you can find more information regarding this project I have been working on:

For more information regarding this wonderful Open Source project you can visit the the project's Official Website, as well as one of my previous contributions. If there's any specific kind of information you'd like to read about this project, please leave your requests in the comments below and I will undoubtedly do my best to provide all information necessary promptly.

I'm glad I was given the opportunity to offer my services and therefore I will continue to work hard and do my best.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

This is the twenty-fifth part of a very demanding but rather useful project. As mentioned in almost all of my previous contributions, the utilization of too many technical terms is making this endeavour a lot harder than it may seem. It is also worth keeping in mind that FreeCAD is a large project that consists of roughly 31,770 words. Taking everything mentioned above into consideration, and in order to be able to provide a quality end product, I have decided that I will be translating from 900+ to 1,200+ words in each part, making sure to conclude at least two to three parts every seven days so that this project is finished in time. My translation is now 86.6% complete and subject to @ruth-girl's proof-reading.

  • Languages

The current project is being translated from English to Greek.

  • In This Session

I checked all previously translated strings of the Sketcher.ts file once again before I started working on the remaining strings of this file. As mentioned in the previous part, I have to keep going through this process mainly due to the fact that this is another file that includes too many strings that were already translated and needed to be corrected. Concerning the already submitted suggestions, I spotted a couple of poorly translated strings once again. Some of them included errors regarding syntax and grammar, while others were just not properly translated. Even though I am used to having to deal with strings that consist of maximum three to four words, I have to admit that the Sketcher.ts file includes many strings that are comprised of more words. However, despite the larger strings this was another rather demanding part, as many of those strings are poorly written and need to be handled with caution and precision. It is worth noting that the Sketcher.ts file consists of 3,940 words and is now approximately 80% complete. On to the current session's mini sample.

Here's a little taste of the Sketcher.ts files' strings that were translated in this session:

The origin of the selected sketch is not aligned with the origin of this sketch. Hold Ctrl+Alt to disregard it.

This string informs the user that the selected sketch and the sketch being used bare reference geometry differences. Greek translation: Το σημείο τομής των αξόνων του επιλεγμένου σκαριφήματος δεν ταυτίζεται με το σημείο τομής των αξόνων αυτού του σκαριφήματος. Κρατήστε πιεσμένα τα πλήκτρα Ctrl+Alt για να γίνει παράβλεψη.

More elements than possible for the given arc of ellipse were provided. These were ignored.

This string refers to a notification that informs the user about the maximum number of elements that can be taken into consideration when creating an arc of ellipse. Greek translation: Δόθηκαν περισσότερα στοιχεία από όσα είναι εφικτό να ληφθούν υπόψη για το δεδομένο τόξο έλλειψης. Τα περιττά στοιχεία αγνοήθηκαν.

Select two or more lines from the sketch.

This string refers to a command that enables the user to pick two or more linear geometric elements from a specific sketch. Greek translation: Επιλέξτε δύο ή περισσότερες γραμμές από το σκαρίφημα.

Can't map the sketch to selected object. %1.

This string refers to a message that appears on the screen when the user is trying to project a sketch on a specific object's faces. It is worth noting that the character '%1' represents a system variable and therefore remains untranslated. Greek translation: Αδύνατη η αποτύπωση του σκαριφήματος στο επιλεγμένο αντικείμενο. %1.

Hope you enjoyed this mini sample. As explained before, the vast majority of the strings included in the files of FreeCAD can be rather confusing and unclear, demanding theoretical knowledge of various scientific fields.

It is more than obvious that this was another difficult part. As you can see in this mini sample I shared with you, technical terms are still plentiful and dev terminology keeps adding layers of difficulty. The Sketcher.ts files includes too many unclear strings that induce the need for advanced theoretical skills regarding Geometry and Physics, making this a rather demanding task. As explained in my previous contributions posts, constant extensive research is absolutely necessary in order to translate the files of FreeCAD with accuracy, as the majority of its files' strings are poorly written and therefore can be quite confusing. Even in cases of relatively easier parts or files, the same ol' obstacles are still standing in my way; the FreeCAD wiki documentation is still incomplete, which means that many features and commands of the software remain unexplained on the web, plus there is no context available regarding the majority of its files' strings. It goes without saying that working on this project can be an exhausting process.

In conclusion, this was another difficult part. I had to spend a considerable amount of time searching the web and trying to gather information in order to be able to provide accurate translations. This means I had to put a lot of effort into this. Since FreeCAD is a purely scientific tool, I feel obliged to provide the most accurate translations. Let's always keep in mind that constant corrections keep taking place due to the fact that things tend to get quite complicated as I move forward. Of course these words are never included in my word count. I will keep working hard in order to provide a quality end product.

  • Word Count

According to Crowdin, in this part I translated 935 words (949 as demonstrated on Crowdin, minus approximately 2% of those as untranslated words). I have now translated a total of 27,421 words.

Thank you for your contribution to the Davinci-Utopian translation project @lordneroo!
This was the 25th part of FreeCAD and your 26th contribution to the translations category in total.

FreeCAD is a difficult project; not only is it a long text, but technical terms are plentiful and you need to spend a long time looking up for the correct translation of those terms in the target (Greek) language. I trust you being an engineer qualifies you for this particular project and I am sure you will manage to complete it correctly.

I am very satisfied with your performance, @lordneroo! Your translation was very good, you made no mistakes, your writing style was perfect for the project and followed the style you’ve been using in the project all this time. You do your research before submitting a translation of a “tricky” term and always pay attention to the context and the guidelines in the comment section of the strings.

Your contribution post is, as always, explanatory and very detailed, with a very good formatting and personal writing style.

In general, you are doing an amazing job here and we thank you for that! Keep it up!
