Makovski estudió en la Escuela de Pintura, Escultura y Arquitectura de Moscú, entre los años 1851 y 1857.
Entre los años 1858 y 1863 estudió en la Academia Imperial de Artes, luego en el año 1869 fue contratado como profesor en la mencionada institución.
En el año 1870 se hizo miembro de la Sociedad de Exposiciones Artísticas Itinerantes, que fue creada para protestar contra el academicismo de la Academia Imperial de Artes.
Viajó a Egipto y a Serbia, con el objetivo de indagar sobre la forma de vida de los habitantes de esos países.
A lo largo de su carrera se ocupó de pintar escenas de género, obras mitológicas y retratos.
Perteneció al movimiento Peredvizhniki, desde 1879.
Falleció el 17 de septiembre de 1915, en San Petesburgo.

Makovsky studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture between 1851 and 1857.
Between 1858 and 1863, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, then in 1869 he was hired as a professor there.
In 1870, he became a member of the Society of Traveling Art Exhibitions, which was created to protest against the academicism of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
He traveled to Egypt and Serbia with the aim of investigating the way of life of the inhabitants of those countries.
Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to painting genre scenes, mythological works, and portraits.
He belonged to the Peredvizhniki movement from 1879.
He died on September 17, 1915, in Saint Petersburg.
