Hemos llegado a la edición 156 de Arte y Escritura. Para esta el invitado es George Wesley Bellows:

No hay precisión con respecto a su fecha de nacimiento. Algunos biógrafos dicen que nació el 12 de agosto de 1882, y otros señalan que fue el 19. Pero de lo que no hay duda es del lugar, pues nació en Ohio, Estados Unidos.

Entre los años 1901 y 1904 se formó en la Universidad Estatal de Ohio. En la referida institución practicaba béisbol y baloncesto. Además, realizada ilustraciones para un periódico estudiantil. En ambas actividades, George era excelente. Sin embargo, su objetivo personal era convertirse en pintor. Por ello, abandonó la universidad, antes de graduarse, y se fue a Nueva York con intenciones de estudiar arte.

En Nueva York se asoció al grupo The Eigh (Base de la Escuela Ashcan), Que se dedicaba a retratar la sociedad americana en distintos escenarios. Su maestro fue el artista plástico Robert Henry.

La fama de Bellows comenzó a sentirse en el año 1908. De acuerdo, con algunos críticos de arte, sus obras eran crudas. Sin embargo, para otros, eran audaces y no solo superaban las obras del maestro Henry, sino también la pintura de otros artistas famosos.

En sus obras se hacía patente la cruda realidad vivida por los obreros estadounidense y se cuestionaba la vida de la clase social alta.

En el año 1909 fue maestro en la escuela de arte "Art Students League of New York".

Era un hombre de ideas socialistas. Creía en los derechos de los trabajadores y en sus justas reivindicaciones sociales.

Fue ilustrador de varios libros, y también trabajó en la Escuela del Instituto de Arte de Chicago en el año 1919.

Bellons murió el 8 de enero de 1925, en la ciudad de Nueva York, a causa de una peritonitis.

We've reached issue 156 of Art and Writing. This time, the guest is George Wesley Bellows:

His date of birth is uncertain. Some biographers say he was born on August 12, 1882, and others say it was the 19th. But there's no doubt about his place, as he was born in Ohio, United States.

Between 1901 and 1904, he studied at Ohio State University. There, he played baseball and basketball. He also created illustrations for a student newspaper. George excelled in both activities. However, his personal goal was to become a painter. Therefore, he dropped out of college before graduating and went to New York to study art.

In New York, he joined The Eight (the Ashcan School of Art), a group dedicated to portraying American society in various settings. His mentor was the artist Robert Henry.

Bellows's fame began to be felt in 1908. Some art critics agreed that his works were crude. However, others believed they were bold and surpassed not only Henry's work but also the work of other famous artists.

His works revealed the harsh reality experienced by American workers and questioned the life of the upper class.

In 1909, he taught at the Art Students League of New York art school.

He was a man of socialist ideas. He believed in workers' rights and their just social demands.

He illustrated several books and also worked at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1919.

Bellons died on January 8, 1925, in New York City, from peritonitis.
