Hemos llegado a la edición 161 del concurso "Arte y Escritura". Para esta semana, les traigo como invitado a Henry Ossawa Tanner:

Este distinguido artista plástico nació el 21 de junio de 1805, en Pittsburgh (Estados Unidos). Fue el hijo mayor de nueve hermanos.

Su madre era Sarah Elizabeth Tanner, una mujer negra que pasó sus primeros años de vida como esclava, y su padre, Benjamin Tucker Tanner, quien fue pastor de la Iglesia Episcopal Metodista Africana.

Cuando Henry cumplió trece años dijo que quería ser pintor. Y en el año 1879 se postuló para estudiar arte en la Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Sin embargo, no se le hizo fácil ni ingresar ni permanecer en el instituto, debido al fuerte rechazo que recibía por ser negro. De hecho, era el único estudiante negro de la Academia. Terminó sus estudios con éxito en el año 1885.

En el año 1886 abrió un taller de pintura en Filadelfia. Luego fue contratado para dar clase en la Universidad Clark. Pero renunció al poco tiempo, debido al maltrato que recibía por ser negro.

Viajó a Francia el año 1891 para estudiar en la Academia Julián. Estando en París se unió al American Art Students Club.

Como en París, Henry no sintió rechazo por su color de piel decidió quedarse a vivir allí.

En el año 1899 contrajo nupcias con la cantante de ópera Jessie Olsson; esta era estadounidense, con antecedentes familiares suecos. La pareja tuvo un hijo llamado Jesse Tanner.

A raíz de la muerte de su esposa en el año 1925, Henry vendió la casa donde ambos vivieron. Él falleció doce años después, el 24 de mayo de 1937, en VI Distrito de París (Francia).

This distinguished visual artist was born on June 21, 1805, in Pittsburgh (United States). He was the eldest of nine children.

His mother was Sarah Elizabeth Tanner, a Black woman who spent her early years as a slave, and his father was Benjamin Tucker Tanner, a pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

When Henry was thirteen, he said he wanted to be a painter. In 1879, he applied to study art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. However, it was not easy for him to get into the academy, nor to remain there, due to the strong prejudice he faced because he was Black. In fact, he was the only Black student at the Academy. He successfully completed his studies in 1885.

In 1886, he opened a painting studio in Philadelphia. He was then hired to teach at Clark University. But he resigned shortly after, due to the mistreatment he received because he was Black.

He traveled to France in 1891 to study at the Académie Julian. While in Paris, he joined the American Art Students Club.

Since he did not experience prejudice based on his skin color in Paris, he decided to stay there.

In 1899, he married the opera singer Jessie Olsson; she was American, with Swedish family roots. The couple had a son named Jesse Tanner. #
Following the death of his wife in 1925, Henry sold the house where they had lived together. He passed away twelve years later, on May 24, 1937, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, France.
