What is taking place in California is a developing catastrophe.

What is the big problem?

SUBSIDENCE.

Subsidence - Defined: The gradual caving in or sinking of an area of land.

Simply explained... farmers have been extracting water from aquifers much faster than the water can be replenished naturally, and the ground sinks - basically squeezing out the aquifers storage capacity forever.

In 20 years, in some places, the ground has subsided 5 to 6 feet or more!

So what could go wrong?

Wells will fail as the aquifer can't keep up with demand.

Aquifer capacity is reduced, destroying that water source, effectively forever.

The subsidence will damage or destroy concrete water channels, roads, railways and other infrastructure.

As the ground sinks lower and lower, flooding risks rise exponentially.

So, it's an ongoing and worsening disaster.

Getting worse every day.

This will lead to water shortages, which will result in crop losses. Which will result in higher food prices. And shortages of some food items. And bankruptcies of farmers.
