Walk with me along Chester's Riverfront
We decided to spend an afternoon in Chester, Cheshire, and as the old city isn't close to the train station, we walked along the river to get there. I thought you might want to come along for the walk. (You will see the old city soon in another post.)
Leaving the train station, we wound our way through a few streets and came to some park gates. As we passed through them, to our right was this building that had intricate woodwork and carvings, above.
We continued in that direction, passing through parkland with mature trees, flower beds, and statues. It was all very pretty.
At one point, we came across these Mallard ducks and also these huge pigeons which I later identified as Common Wood Pigeons.
We had spotted the River Dee and kept walking in that general direction.
It's at the end of this row of old buildings behind the Boathouse. Turn right.
Lovely! We continued along the riverfront. Beyond the bridge, the walkway widened. You could take a tour boat along the River Dee here.
The weather was cool and this is before tourist season so it's not crowded here. (It was busier once we got to the old city.) On a warmer day, we might have stopped for an ice cream cone. Instead, we hurried along. We had gotten there later than expected because we weren't on the most direct train route from Manchester.
There were these strange trees in several places. I don't know what kind they were but, despite their size, they were all trimmed back.
One of the tour boats passed us.
There were places for the crowds to sit and sun themselves. If only it were a little bit warmer.
As it started to climb, the road changed. Don't you love all the textures in these old places?
Chester has been a city since 1541 but prior to that it had been the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix, founded in AD 70.
The old city's walls are still completely intact. Looking back in the direction we had come, we're beside those old walls now.
And then we arrived at a city gate!
You will want to come back as we tour the old city in:

Looks like a fantastic place to explore. Are cities are so modern on this side of the pond. I love whenever I get a chance to visit Europe. Thinking about the history of place really gets the imagination soaring. Thanks so much for sharing your day with us:)
Everybody hits the high points in Chester. I thought it was equally important to share the journey to them. And if you visit, it's nice to know you can reach the old city by taking a walk along the river.
walking is always my first choice:)
70 AD, now that is a long time ago, and a lot of history, especially since the walls are still standing. Loved joining you on your walk about town.
@bashadow I'm pretty sure those are the walls from 1541. There is a place where you can see what's left of the older ruins.

We didn't get up that far on our trip last year but are planning to return so will certainly get there at some stage. Looks really nice.

It gets much better!
I loved the UK...My ancestry is from there so I felt like I was home...Well, not home like in Australia, the best place ever, but home nonetheless. Will come back for sure.

Same with me. I was staying in the area where one grandparent was born and found his parents' grave. There is so much more history and family history.
I think I just want to go back to Cornwall for a Cornish pasty! :) (Nah, I want to go everywhere!
I had a Cornish pasty at the train station in Manchester, delicious. I want to go back for the minted lamb and roasties (small roasted potatoes) wrapped in a 7" Yorkshire pudding. lol
Stop it, you’re making me hungry! 😳
