My kid’s summer schedule is ordinary yet busy. Every morning, they do homework and play outside for a bit, then in the afternoon, it’s math and English tutoring—math on odd-numbered days, English on even-numbered days, so there’s always one subject each afternoon. In the evening, they finish the homework from the tutoring center first, then head out to play again.
This past Saturday and Sunday, it was so hot outside that I stayed cooped up in the air-conditioned room all day, lying around like a sloth. But the more I lazed, the more sluggish I felt. So after dinner, when the kids went out to bike with friends for an hour in the evening, I decided to get some exercise too.
The temperature showed 33 degrees in the evening, but with Wuhan’s oppressive humidity, it felt more like 35 degrees. During the day, it hit 37 degrees, but the weather forecast never goes above 40. In reality, outdoor temperatures in Wuhan are already 40 to 50 degrees.
I’m too lazy to complain about the weather bureau—they’re clearly afraid to report the real numbers. Even if it hits over 40, they’ll just say “39 degrees, with local areas exceeding that; please take precautions.” They never dare to report 40 outright.
I wonder if this offends someone’s interests? Or maybe when it’s over 40 degrees, major companies have to issue heat subsidies to workers? Who knows.
I went for a run around 7:30 to 8:00 in the evening. Let me see—it’s been a month since I last ran, ever since I got back from a business trip in June. Worried my stamina had dropped, I hurried to get moving.
The air was scorching, and the carbon dioxide I exhaled mixed with the blistering heat. I thought my pace was really slow, almost hitting 7 minutes per kilometer, but to my surprise, the app showed it was under 6 minutes—actually, I kept it steady around 5 minutes and 30 seconds the whole time.
That shocked me. Could it be that storing more fat from a month of not running gave me extra energy for this run? No idea.
I ran for about half an hour, then walked along the lake for a bit. After 40 minutes total, I headed home.
That night, all three of us were soaked in sweat. The kid biked for an hour, drenched from head to toe like they’d been caught in a rainstorm—even their hair stuck to their scalp.
My husband power-walked for an hour and a half, also dripping with sweat. And me? Running made me sweat even more.
Once home, I chugged a bottle of Alien electrolyte drink to replenish lost salts and nutrients. We turned on the air conditioner, but didn’t set it too low—after exercising, blood vessels are constricting and pores are adjusting. We waited a while before setting it to 26 or 27 degrees.
Honestly, breaking a good sweat in this heat feels great. For us women, it’s especially good for detoxing and keeping skin healthy—way better than 10 face masks. No breakouts, no dark spots. Definitely a good feeling.
