RE: 🍷Mazzle's Wine Sunday - Penfolds - Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro🍷

The price of beer and wine in Australia bothers me quite a lot. Most alcoholic drinks are marked up in value by around 40% due to taxation. It's insane, and makes it very hard for a small business owner to start producing his/ her own brand of drink.

If I want a really good bottle of red, I have to spend around $60 - 80 or more. I have one bottle in my cellar that I bought for $120 a few years back. Overseas you could get that bottle for around $70.

It's actually more cost effective for an Australian producer to send their stuff overseas since they don't have to pay the insane tax on their produce here.

Sort:

Wow! That’s a huge tax! I’m not sure if I want to visit Australia now. Hehe, just kidding, I want to visit as many places as I can.

Yep, and the 40% tax bill doesn't even include the mark up so that the producer can make a profit. It's insane.

I think it was partly to try to deter excessive drinking in the country but it's such an ingrained part of our culture that it didn't slow anyone down. It just made the cheap alcohol more popular and made it harder to produce high quality products.
