Ugandan Man with 12 Wives, 102 Children, and 578 Grandchildren Says He is Done Expanding His Family
Musa Hasahya Kasera, a 70-year-old man from Uganda’s Butaleja District, recently made headlines after announcing that he would no longer be expanding his already enormous family. Kasera, who lives in the village of Bugisa, is the father of 102 children and the grandfather of 578, born from his 12 wives.
Once a well-known and relatively wealthy cattle herder, Kasera began marrying at the age of 17. Over the decades, his family grew exponentially as he continued to take on additional wives, all of whom lived together under the same compound. He explained that in the past, having a large family was considered a sign of wealth and prestige in his community. But today, the father of 102 says the burden of caring for such a huge household has become overwhelming.
With limited resources and rising costs of living, Kasera admits he can no longer provide adequately for everyone. His two-acre piece of land, which was once sufficient to support the family, has proven inadequate. Many of his children are unemployed, and some have dropped out of school due to lack of financial support. Kasera has now asked his wives to begin using contraceptives, marking a significant shift from his previous lifestyle. He also holds monthly family meetings to manage internal disputes and coordinate family responsibilities.
Despite the immense challenges, Kasera maintains a sense of pride in his legacy but recognizes the need to adapt. He stated, “I have learnt my lesson, and I will not marry again. I will also not father any more children. I have seen the hardship my large family faces.” His story has gained global attention, sparking conversations about family planning, polygamy, and the responsibilities that come with parenthood in a changing world.
