Reality That Exists Outside our Normal Perception?
I was watching an interesting podcast/interview yesterday, in which a long-time doctor, psychiatrist and neuroscientist was talking about our senses, and all the things we can actually do, even though we're not aware that we can do them.
Noteworthy here was the fact that humans generally use our traditionally accepted five senses but we actually might have as many as 32 senses! To most people, that probably sounds like a load of rubbish... but what if it were true?
One of the points this doctor was also making is that science tends to develop a bias towards — and even get mired down in — that which is already known and established.
That is to say — for example — that even suggesting that we might have more than the (accepted) five senses isn't met with scientific curiosity and a desire to study/explore new possibilities but instead with skepticism, and the potential risk for the proponent to be discredited, labeled a "quack" and even be sent away to live out their days in a little white padded room, dosed up with 8mg of Haldol, daily.
Among many other things, the Doctor had been studying such (well documented) phenomena as Terminal Lucidity, an unexplained state in which someone with virtually zero cognitive abilities (from Dementia, or Alzheimers, etc.) suddenly becomes completely lucid, with perfect recall for a brief period, minutes or hours before actual death. But why?
And there's the physiological and psychological changes people almost invariably experience if they have been "clinically dead" and yet end up living. The question is not so much about the fact that they may have had a "spiritual experience," so much as about why so many report having the same experience. Why the SAME?
Why can cats detect cancer and diabetes in a human, before most medical testing can? What's at work, there? What sense is being used, because it's more than just an acute sense of smell.
The old saying goes that "There's more between heaven and earth than we know," but I have my doubt that purely refers to "things spiritual."
There's lots and lots of stuff in the universe that we simply don't know. And yet, many scientists are closed off to the possibilities, dismissing them as "rubbish," without further examination?
But why?
Is it ego getting in the way? Or some fear that "everything we know" might have to be revised and/or re-written?
As a bit of a thought experiment, if we look back across history, consider that sudden deathly illnesses from viruses and bacteria were declared "the work of the Devil" in olden times, before we were able to actually see the squiggly little things in the Petri dish.
Consider that if you were to show your smartphone to someone in the Middle Ages, you'd likely be hanged for practicing witchcraft!
And I can assure you that microwaves have been present in the universe for billions of years, even though we've only been capable of detecting and using them for about 60-70 years.
If we turn the equation around... would we be able to comprehend the science of the year 2225? Or would it look exactly like "magic" to us?
It would be very narrow minded to assume that we already know everything there is to know! Particularly if we stop for a moment and look at the relatively short time Homo Sapiens has been on Planet Earth, compared to the overall age of the universe!
But somebody always has to be "the first," and being the first to challenge previously accepted ways of thinking can be both difficult and even dangerous.
I have always found it fascinating to listen to those who are exploring "new frontiers" before the world is willing to even think about them.
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great reast of your week!
How about YOU? Do you think what we call "impossible" or "supernatural" today, might become "common science" in another 100 or 200 years? Leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
