Your Why Lives in Others.
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” — Howard Thurman
I think we all have those random moments of contemplation where we ponder the point of our existence on some deeper level and personally I am of the opinion that your purpose is not the job title on your email signature or the label you introduce yourself with at a braai. It’s not even “the thing you do” at all. It’s what comes alive in other people because of what you do. That is the foundation of your “why”.
Think about it. A teacher doesn’t only “teach”, the real purpose is the light that switches on in a child’s eyes when they finally get it. A musician doesn’t just strum strings or hit keys, the purpose is the way someone else feels less alone or down because those notes reached them in their darkest corner and lifted them out. Even the simplest of acts, making coffee for someone, planting a tree, writing a line in a notebook can ripple outward and shift something invisible in the world.
It may seem a little bit crazy, and I guess it is really… if you “fully process it” but it is definitely true. Your soul already knows. It is forever present, conscious and pointing you quietly in the right direction. But we, “clever” humans, like to complicate things. We chase, we doubt, we second guess ourselves until the truth is covered under ten layers of “what ifs” and “not enoughs.” But the soul is patient. It waits. It already knows the map and we just have to stop pretending we are lost.
This morning, while lying wide eyed in bed refusing to get up because omgaaawd it was a fresh one, I caught myself smiling at that thought. Because trusting your own inner compass is not about suddenly having all the answers. It is just about having (or finding) the courage to follow the “pull” in your chest, even if the road ahead looks confusing to everyone else. It’s about knowing that the thing you create, the way you move, the way you live, might just be the exact medicine someone else needed.
So instead of obsessing about what you should be doing, maybe ask yourself “What shifts in others when I show up as myself?” That is where the soul points. That is who you are and that is your purpose… and I hope that this “random” contemplation of mine follows you into the day like sunlight on your back.
