Mérida is the capital of the Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura. It is located in the province of Badajoz and has 53,098 inhabitants. The city was founded in 25 BC by the Roman emperor Augustus, primarily to control the area, but also to settle veterans of the two legions V Alaude and X Gémina. Wikipedia
